Even with only a Vietnamese bachelor's degree and no master's degree, is there a chance to obtain a full Ph.D. scholarship in the United States?

The Writeria is proud to share the success story of Nguyen Quoc Chương, who has excellently achieved:

  • A full Ph.D. scholarship in Mathematics at the University of Buffalo.
  • A full Ph.D. scholarship in Computer Science at the University of Oregon, USA.
  • A 25% scholarship for the Master's program in Artificial Intelligence and its Applications at the University of Essex, UK.

When approaching The Writeria with only about 3 months left before the study abroad application deadline, Chương had graduated from a natural science university in Vietnam, majoring in Physics, and DID NOT HAVE A MASTER'S DEGREE. However, he expressed a desire to seek a full Ph.D. scholarship in the United States to pursue his passion for scientific research, with a determination to switch fields from Physics to Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. This transition poses a significant challenge when applying for scholarships.

So how can one apply for a full scholarship in a completely different field from the undergraduate major they have studied before?

To secure a full scholarship in a completely different field from the undergraduate major, Chương's impressive academic achievements, including a 3.5/4.0 GPA (top 2% at his university), GRE score of 317/340, were not sufficient. In the realm of studying abroad, especially in the U.S., the personal statement is a crucial factor that distinguishes candidates. Understanding this, Chương enrolled in a scholarship hunting course with 3 mentors - 1 mentee at The Writeria to pursue his dream of studying abroad.

Before turning to The Writeria, Chương had previously applied to another scholarship hunting service but did not receive satisfactory assistance. He had to wait for 2 months for his mentor there to review his essay for the first time, only to be informed that due to numerous imminent deadlines, his essay's review would be delayed.

After assessing his profile, The Writeria assigned 3 mentors with backgrounds in Computer Science to provide Chương with the best support. Despite being confident in his specialized knowledge and academic writing skills, Chương struggled with writing his personal statement, especially when discussing himself. The Writeria guided him in presenting a compelling argument in his 1000-word essay to the admissions committee, persuading them that his desired field change was justifiable and aligned with his capabilities, despite lacking a Master's degree like other applicants.

Below is an excerpt from Chuong's essay after completing the 2-month scholarship hunting course with 3 mentors - 1 mentee at The Writeria. Contact The Writeria to view the full essay.

"In 2019, following my dream of working as a professional researcher, I worked as a research assistant at Vietnam Quantum Computing - the research group formed by a community of Vietnamese quantum researchers worldwide from top-tier universities, such as Brown University or the University of California, Berkeley. My duty was to develop a quantum computing simulator and its applications for machine learning. As of 2019, quantum computing was an emerging research field worldwide. Consequently, I wrote a quantum platform that simulates a quantum computer to attract scientists to this emerging technology. The highlight of my achievement in this position was a first-authored publication at Machine Learning: Science and Technology, a top-tier venue in the field. This publication gave people new insights into approaching quantum algorithms and quantum simulations with a three-time faster speed than other famous platforms. It also gave me a chance to be one of the leaders of summer schools (one of its advisors is Professor Dam Thanh Son - an owner of the Dirac Prize) for high school students about quantum machine learning. I was one of the leaders of the team, who helped manage the program activity, and a contributory lecturer. The success of these two schools in 2020 and 2021 was essential in my scientific journey because I worked simultaneously as a researcher and a teacher. Besides gaining many precious experiences in writing a scientific paper, working at Vietnam Quantum Computing also helped broaden my horizons of finding ways to improve lives in an air-polluted territory via computer science, such as using neural networks to find new materials that could help to filter out carbon dioxide. I wish to attend an MSc course to prepare better and fulfill my ambition to pursue a Ph.D. degree."

Through relentless effort and determination, Chương realized his dream of scientific research by securing two full Ph.D. scholarships in the United States. The Writeria is proud to have supported and accompanied Chương on his journey towards achieving this dream.

If you also aspire to study abroad and conduct research at top universities, join forces with The Writeria. We pledge to provide you with dedicated support and top-quality education!
